PT-141, also called bremelanotide, is a peptide that activates melanocortin receptors in the brain, including the MC4 receptor found in regions that regulate sexual desire. It was developed from a peptide originally studied for skin pigmentation, after researchers noticed its effect on arousal.
That mechanism sets it apart from medications like sildenafil, which work on blood flow. PT-141 acts upstream, on the interest and arousal signal itself, which is why it is studied for low desire in women as well as arousal in men, and why it can work when blood-flow medications do not.
