What Is MOTS-c?

(mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA type-c)

MOTS-c is a small peptide encoded in the DNA of your mitochondria, the structures inside cells that produce energy. It acts as a signal that helps muscle cells take up glucose and use fuel efficiently. Research shows circulating MOTS-c declines with age, and lower levels have been linked to insulin resistance and reduced metabolic flexibility.

MOTS-c activates AMPK, an enzyme that acts as the cell's fuel gauge. When AMPK is switched on, cells take up more glucose, burn more fat for energy, and build new mitochondria.

How MOTS-c Works

What MOTS-c does in the body over time.

Day 1

MOTS-c signals muscle cells to take up and use glucose more efficiently, activating pathways tied to cellular energy.

30 Days

You may notice more energy and better stamina during training.

3 Months

Studied for its effect on insulin sensitivity and metabolic flexibility, the body's ability to switch between burning carbohydrates and fat.

6 Months

Continued use may support body composition and exercise capacity.

1 Year and Beyond

Part of a long-term approach to metabolic health as mitochondrial function declines with age.

Timeline reflects the general mechanism and published research. Individual results vary and are not guaranteed.
